Das Mahavidya

Hindus revere the Nari Shakti (woman power) in all of her beautiful and ferocious manifestations. The 10 Hindu goddesses known as the Dasa Mahavidya are Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Chhinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala. Every Mahavidya is a manifestation of the Adi Shakti. According to legend, Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, wed Shiva without her father's consent. Daksha planned a massive yagna (fire sacrifice) as retaliation with the express intent of offending Shiva. All the Gods and Goddesses, save Shiva and Sati, were invited. A daughter doesn't need a father's invitation to attend a yagna, Sati reasoned when she learned about it. She also wanted to question her father the reason her spouse was left out of the invitation. That was not what Shiva wanted to happen. He made every effort to discourage her. Sati, the Mother of the Universe, was enraged at Shiva's behavior. She was converted into the Dasa Mahavidya by her rage.
